School Holiday Programme: Marine VHF Radio & Basic Sea Survival Course

A school holiday programme at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum suited to 12-16 year olds.

Presented by Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum in partnership with Coastguard Boating Education.

Course Information:

Run throughout the second week of the April school holidays.  This programme is ideal for students who are considering careers in the maritime world as well as recreational boating.

Participants will complete theory modules each morning at Voyager, followed by a practical activity in the afternoon.

By the end of the week, students will be qualified Marine VHF Radio Operators, and will be equipped with the sea survival skills necessary for cruising boaties and coastal race yacht crews.

Course Timetable:
Subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen events.

Day 1
Morning: Marine VHF Radio
Afternoon: Practical activities

Day 2

Morning: Basic Sea Survival Skills
Afternoon: Practical activities at Tepid Baths

Day 3
10am - 2:30pm: Excursion to Wreck Bay on Rangitoto Island
3pm - 4pm: Prizegiving

  • Pro-words & phonetic alphabet
  • Call signs & channel allocation

    2. Safety
  • Trip reports
  • Weather information
  • Securite

    3. Distress Urgency
  • "MAYDAY" & "PAN PAN" calls
  • EPIRB and SAR

    Basic Sea Survival
    Aim: To introduce essential sea survival techniques and equipment

  • History & legislation
  • Accident, emergencies & equipment
  • Safety & emergency planning
  • Damage control
  • Emergency procedures
  • Distress signals
  • Search & rescue procedures
