School Holiday Programme: Day Skipper Course 27 September - 1 October

Day Skipper Level 2

A school holiday programme at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum suited to 12-16 year olds.

Presented by Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum in partnership with Coastguard Boating Education.

Course Information:
Participants will complete theory modules each morning at Voyager, followed by a practical activity in the afternoon, which will include:

  • On-water experiences on the Devonport ferry and the heritage scow, Ted Ashby
  • Visiting the Marine Rescue Centre, Coastguard Northern Region and the Westpac Helicopter Trust Base
  • Exploring the museum galleries

    Boating experience is not a prerequisite but an interest in maritime activities is recommended.

    The programme is ideal for students who are considering careers in the maritime world as well as recreational boating.

    At the end of the course, students will have:
  • Attained a Day Skipper Certificate with Unit Standard 26542, Level 2, 6 credits
  • Completed both on and off the water tutorials with accredited tutors
  • Participated in on the water sailing experiences
  • Visited a variety of commercial maritime operations

Monday 27 September
0830-1200: Basic boat information
1200-1230: Lunch
1230-1400: Buoy and beacon practical (swimming togs and towel required)

1400-1500: Museum gallery exercise

Tuesday 28 September

0830-1200: Navigation
1200-1230: Lunch
1230-1400: Ted Ashby trip & chart exercise
1400-1500: ‘Get Your Bearings’ exercise

Wednesday 29 September
0830-1200: Rules & Regulations

1200-1230: Lunch

1230-1400: Visit to Blue Water Black Magic - A Tribute to Sir Peter Blake
1400-1500: ‘Knots and Yachts’ exercise

Thursday 30 September
0830-1200: Emergencies and procedures
1200-1230: Lunch
1230-1500: Visit to the Marine Rescue
Centre, Coastguard Northern
Region and Westpac
Helicopter Trust Base

Friday 1 October
0830-1200: Knots, refresher and exam
1200-1230: Lunch
1230-1600: SS PUKE steam experience, guided tours and video time

Awards ceremony - Friday 8 October

What to bring daily: packed lunch, snacks, drinks, wet weather gear, swimming togs and towel.

Booking deadline: 17 September 2010

Fee: $165 (includes lessons, exam fees and boat trips).  A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to secure place, balance to be paid on first day 27/09/2010.
