School Holiday Programme

Day Skipper Course: 25th-29th January 2010
A school holiday programme at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum suited to 12-16 year olds.

Presented by Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum in partnership with Coastguard Boating Education.

Course Information:

Participants will complete theory modules each morning at Voyager, followed by practical activity in the afternoon.

  • Sail on Voyager's sailing scow, Ted Ashby
  • Visit the Marine Rescue Centre
  • Visit the Westpac Helicopter Trust Base
  • Ferry trip to Devonport

    Boating experience is not a prerequisite but an interest in maritime activities is recommended.

    The programme is ideal for students who are considering careers in the maritime world as well as recreational boating.

    At the end of the course, students will have:


  • Attained NZ Day Skipper certificate with Unit Standard 6915 Level 1, 2 credits.
  • Completed both on and off the water tutorials with accredited tutors.
  • Participated in on the water sailing experiences.
  • Visited a variety of commercial maritime operations.

    1200-1300     Lunch
    1300-1400     Ferry to/from Devonport, noting buoys and beacons
    1400-1500     Voyager galleries visit

    Tuesday 26th January 2010
    0830-1200     Navigation
    1200-1300     Lunch
    1300-1400     Ted Ashby trip
    1400-1500     Get Your Bearings course

    Wednesday 27th January 2010
    0830-1200     Rules and Regulations
    1200-1300     Lunch
    1300-1400     Blue Water Black Magic gallery visit
    1400-1500     Knots and Yachts course

    Thursday 28th January 2010
    0830-1200     Emergency information
    1200-1230     Lunch
    1230-1500     Visits to Marine Rescue Centre, Coastguard Northern Region and Westpac Helicopter Trust Base

    Friday 29th January 2010
    0830-1200     Knots, refresher and final assessment
    1200-1230     Lunch
    1230-1330     Parents and children visit Blue Water Black Magic gallery
    1330-1500     Presentation ceremony

    Fee: $100 (includes assessment fee)
    $50 non-refundable deposit to secure place, remaining balance to be paid on the first day - 25/01/2010
