Welcome to the Coastguard Safe Boating Programme!
Introduction to Safe Boating and
Safe Boating are teaching and learning programmes for years 5 to 8. They provide preparation for EOTC boating experiences such as kayaking, yachting and power boating and are designed to lead into practical experiences led by teachers or a contracted EOTC provider.
The programmes are primarily linked to the Health and Physical Education curriculum with links to Science, Technology and English curricula.
Introduction to Safe Boating is a programme designed for students who have little or no boating experience. Safe Boating is for students who have some boating experience.
Teachers should select amongst the activities in both programmes to develop a programme best suited to their students' needs. Some activities are common to both programmes.
Introduction to Safe Boating and Safe Boating include
- classroom based activities that develop knowledge and understanding of essential boating safety and apply the knowledge in practical situations
- activities about wearing lifejackets and using flotation devices. This includes a pool based practical activity. Student's use inquiry techniques to explore concepts of flotation and propulsion.
- activities that involve recording weather conditions and understanding marine and other weather forecasts.
- activities that focus on risk management and critical decision making. Students plan a boating experience and make assessments of provided safe and unsafe boating experiences. In Safe Boating students assess provided video footage. While the focus is on making appropriate risk assessment before going on the water activities provided in Safe Boating include a focus on what to do if things go wrong and individuals end up in the water.
The game Anchors and Flares can be played by the students after they have completed either of the Safe Boating programmes. It is designed to reinforce student understanding of the key messages about safe boating.
